To support National Apprenticeship Week, we are showcasing some motivating stories of how our apprentices are progressing in their chosen careers. We will also be exploring how they are helping the business adapt and build for the future during what has been a challenging year.
Today we speak with Toby Terry who shares his journey so far on the NVQ Level 2 Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship with HBS. Toby 19, started his apprenticeship with HBS in 2017 and is now in his fourth and final year of training.
Alongside his studies at Eastleigh College, he is currently gaining valuable hands-on plumbing and heating experience working with his supervisor on new build housing sites across Hampshire. These include Highwood North Stoneham Park and Barratt Homes Saxon Corner.
Here’s what Toby had to say about his apprenticeship experience and why he chose to start his career with HBS.
Why did you choose HBS for your plumbing and heating apprenticeship?
When I was in my final year of school, I knew that I wanted to go into plumbing and while looking for an apprenticeship I found out about HBS. The company and their apprenticeship scheme sounded like a great environment to work in while also learning a skilled trade.
Tell us what a typical week looks like as an HBS plumbing and heating apprentice?
A typical week as a plumbing and heating apprentice for HBS is early mornings, long days and a lot of hard work but it is a lot of fun. You learn new things all the time and progress every single day, all while having fun.
What are you enjoying the most about your apprenticeship with HBS?
What I enjoy most about my plumbing and heating apprenticeship is learning every day. I enjoy working on a building site with other trades having a laugh. I also enjoy the fact that whatever I need HBS are there to help support me throughout my apprenticeship.
What are your future career goals?
My future career goals are to become a fully qualified plumbing and heating engineer with gas safe and become self-employed. I plan to carry on working with HBS for many years to come.
Outside of your apprenticeship, what are your hobbies/interests?
Outside my apprenticeship with HBS, I play football on Saturday’s and Sunday’s and love going out with my mates on the weekend to town.
