HBS New Energies boost NHS Northwick Park Hospital’s on-site renewable generation with a 55kWp roof mounted solar PV system at its new modular Infectious Disease Ward. The integration of solar panels helped the multi-million-pound scheme achieve its targeted BREEAM rating.
HBS New Energies successfully completes the design and installation of a 55kWp east west roof mounted solar PV system at a new multi-million pound, 63-bed modular scheme for London North West Healthcare NHS Trust at the Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow.
Working closely with main contractor MTX Contracts, HBS delivered an end-to-end solution covering all aspects of design, supply, installation and commissioning of the solar array, ensuring the project achieved its renewable energy requirements.
The new state-of-the-art facility which benefits from an on-site generation source through solar PV is now operational and provides vital acute ward accommodation for 48 bed spaces, 15-bed isolation wards and ancillary rooms, and houses a top floor plant room.
Project delivery
- After initial site surveys HBS’ design team calculated the wind and snow loadings that the PV system would be subjected to and with this calculated the suitable ballast to secure the PV system safely on the roof during its lifetime. We considered the specifications of the building and the non-penetrative roof (roof and parapet height, roof type, orientation of the modules and building). This enabled HBS to complete the design of the PV system to meet the client’s requirements and budget.
-
In order to satisfy the buildings renewable energy targets within the restricted roof space HBS’ design team engineered an innovative east west array. This solar solution exceeded the BREEAM requirements specified and achieved all relevant wind-loading considerations.
-
Lead by a dedicated project manager, HBS’ team of solar installers and electricians completed the installation to the highest quality standards, under strict site conditions and in line with the project’s construction timeline.
-
The highly concentrated roof mounted solar PV system is now generating up to 52,975 kWh of clean electricity per year and over its lifetime will provide a valuable on-site renewable energy source that will help power the NHS hospitals operations and reduce their energy costs. This will enable increased investment in frontline healthcare services.
- In addition to delivering healthy energy savings, the solar array is set to cut Northwick Park Hospital’s carbon emissions by more than 31,000 kg per year, allowing London North West Healthcare NHS Trust to take a step closer to achieving its carbon reduction targets.
